We had just come back to his home in Govindpuri Extension. While I topped up the press club experience with an Old Monk and water, Jassi whipped up his standard but delicious one-pot pressure pan dinner. Faces stuffed we slept, only for him to rouse me three hours later. He was sleepless and decided that an impromptu trip to Kasauli was the right thing to do. We set off in the darkness and the cop who stopped us to ask where we were going got an earful: even my wife doesn’t ask me that, who are you? Was the extent of his response and the cop just smiled and waved us on. We had no hotel booking, no plan, but the air was cool and crisp even as Delhi baked. Having got there, of course he had work to do: and here he was a table parked in the one spot where MTNL signal was available. Of course it was his idea to take photos of each other in front of a tunnel on the train tracks, because, why not? Jaswinder Sidhu did this, and so much more for me. As a journalist he had healthy contempt for the English-speaking swish set that travelled the world and wanted to be close to the players: I was all of that. Jassi did not abide access journalism of any kind, and yet he saw something in me. Jassi indulged me, in his home, at mine, in press clubs around the country and in press boxes around the world. We played cricket together, ate, drank, laughed, and I occasionally cried. But he would not abide my tears because he did not suffer self-pity trips or wallowing. Words are not enough today, but they will have to suffice. I have not lost a friend: I’ve lost an example of many things I wanted to be when I grew up. He was not without fault, of course, and it would dishonour the honesty with which he lived and the unapologetic manner in which he was himself if I portrayed him as some sort of saint today, now that he is no longer with us. But, Jassi had admirable qualities: he always turned up for his friends, and I am fortunate to count myself among this number. He had an opinion and would share it, especially if it disagreed with yours. His would be the first call or message on days when I had a piece in the Hindustan Times that caught his eye. “Vasu, that is a very good story …” he would begin, and by the end of the conversation he would have gently but firmly shown me how it could have been so much better. Jassi would hate to be called a teacher or mentor, but I learned more from him than he will ever know. Today, I have not lost a friend. A person who reflected the best in me, unfailing supported me and never judged me for my many faults, is gone forever. I only hope he is in peace, because that is what he offered to anyone who was his friend in this chaotic, cruel world that many of us can’t make sense of. Go well my brother, you will always have your beloved Waheguru’s blessings and my love and eternal gratitude.

@Indianinfoguide Latency: Jio led with 20.33ms latency - Airtel was actually worst at 43.76ms despite being second in download speed. MTNL 22.84ms, Vi 37.57ms. Voice quality: Jio topped voice quality with highest Mean Opinion Score of 4.36. Best call setup time at 0.56 seconds. Call Setup Success Rate: Jio and Vi both above 99%, Airtel only 97.22%. Airport route coverage: Poor signal on just 0.15% of Noida–IGI Airport route for Jio vs Airtel 0.41%, Vi 0.57%, MTNL 72.48%. Airtel paradox: Second fastest downloads but WORST latency. Upload speeds and consistency matter too.
