On 1 Mar, Kpop fans all over the world were furious. Spotify took down streaming access to the works of Kakao M musicians. Based on the 9th week of the Gaon 200 Chart 2021, 82 songs were distributed through Kakao M which accounts for 40.1% of the total.

@raya_milushev speaking as someone whose music taste is genuinely so broken that I’ve spent the last few nights switching spotify onto private mode to listening to the ketchup song on repeat for about 30 minutes before going to sleep, all i can say is holy **** it’ll never be the same again

@wheeinthefandom When my spotify have problem, I always reboot my phone. If not working, I uninstall and then reinstall. It always worked on me.

The domestic service of Spotify could pose a threat to Kakao Ent’s status as a platform company. Further, Spotify runs its own platform called Spotify for Artists that allows artists to register their music, change their profiles, and affect how users listen to their music.

Even cooler is when I’m listening to music on my phone and I sit down to my computer, the media buttons on my keyboard will control what I’m listening to in Spotify on my phone and AirPods. No need to change source, no need to touch my phone.

There are sharp differences btwn the two. Industry sources report while Spotify has been negotiating licenses with Kakao Ent for a year and a half, it was not able to come to an agreement on the domestic service of Kakao M music leading to a suspension of the global service

Why is the free version of Spotify not available in Korea? Because the margin is too small. In 2014, a Samsung supported ad based streaming service “Milk” was introduced as was a service called “Beat”. Both only lasted a few years.
