BSNL Slips to ₹1,269 Crore Net Loss in Q4 FY26 vs ₹280 Crore Profit a Year Ago; Full Year Loss Doubles to ₹4,738 Crore; Revenue Misses DoT Target by Wide Margin The Numbers — Deteriorating Financials Q4 FY26 net loss: ₹1,269 crore vs net profit of ₹280 crore in Q4 FY25 (accounting changes had boosted prior year earnings) Full year FY26 net loss: ₹4,738 crore — more than double the ₹2,247 crore loss in FY25 Revenue from operations rose only 1.7% to ₹21,199 crore — well below the ₹28,476 crore target set under DoT-BSNL MoU Q4 revenue fell 14% YoY to ₹5,721 crore — decline across all three key segments: Consumer fixed access Consumer mobility Enterprise services Loss Drivers — What Went Wrong Higher network operating expenses Rising employee costs Elevated finance charges and depreciation Cellular business (~26% of revenue) posted only 1% growth in FY26 — revenue at ₹5,571 crore Weak revenue growth despite 42% jump in ARPU to ₹101 in FY26 — surge driven by shrinking active subscriber base, not genuine growth Subscriber Reality — The ARPU Paradox Total mobile subscriber base: 92.9 million at March-end — up from 91.06 million in March 2025 However, active subscriber base declined to 52.7 million at end of March IIFL Capital (May 29 brokerage note): sharp Arpu rise despite weak revenue growth suggests increase driven by shrinking active base — not organic expansion Analysts had questioned the Arpu surge even as BSNL claimed 4G data usage growth Management View — Cautious Optimism BSNL Chairman & MD Robert Ravi in April: "We're entering a growth phase where results of capex investments, backed by government support, are becoming visible" Claims early indicators of trend reversal as customers experience reliable 4G connectivity Target set to raise Arpu to ₹150 in FY27 Accelerating 4G adoption and rising data consumption expected to help achieve target Regulatory & Ministerial Scrutiny During review meeting with Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in April — concerns raised about stagnation in BSNL's core business revenue in FY26 DoT had not responded to queries till press time Financial statements dated May 22 published on BSNL website Core Theme BSNL's Q4 and FY26 results lay bare the scale of the challenge facing India's state-owned telecom — losses more than doubling, revenue missing targets by over ₹7,000 crore, and an Arpu jump that masks a shrinking active base rather than genuine subscriber recovery. While management points to early 4G momentum and government capex support as green shoots, the gap between BSNL's narrative and its financials remains wide, and the path to sustainable profitability looks long without a decisive turnaround in active subscriber addition and core business revenue.

Starlink in India: Satellite internet is finally here. Hype vs Reality Is ₹34K + ₹8.6K/month worth it for you? 🟢 THE PROS 1. Coverage: Works in remote villages, mountains, islands where Jio Fiber/BSNL can’t reach 2. Speed: 25-220 Mbps. Streaming, gaming, WFH = no issue 3. Setup: Dish + Router kit. Plug → auto-connects to satellites. 10 min install 4. Data: Unlimited data + weather resilient uptime 🔴 THE CONS 1. Cost: ₹34,000 hardware + ₹8,600/month. JioFiber starts ₹399, BSNL ₹400 2. Regulations: Needs govt approval. Unlicensed use = hardware confiscation risk 3. Sky needed: No clear sky view = drops. Fails in dense forest/tall buildings 4. Power hungry: Dish uses lots of power. Grid cut = need solar/battery backup WHO SHOULD BUY: Remote areas, farms, hills, disaster zones, backup for businesses → Starlink makes sense. Only option there. WHO SHOULDN’T: City users with Jio/Airtel/BSNL fiber → 10x cheaper, same speeds, no sky/power issues Bottom line: Starlink isn’t “better internet”. It’s “internet where none exists”. National benefit: Digital India for last mile. Consumer reality: Premium price for premium access.
